What a fun week! We sang "I'm H-A-P-P-Y" while learning Honey Horse's H sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV0CblTeRzs We even found the letter H showing us the way to the hospital! Be sure to look for the green H sign when you are driving about with your child. We practiced making our letter h tall enough so it doesn't look like a letter n - tricky letters! We were very interested in looking at video of real umbrella birds that live in the tropics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZVocLe8kBs The umbrella bird song was very catchy and many students are practicing the moves. Sadly, Mrs. Hendry found it difficult to carry the tune even with the ukulele to strum. The children were eager to tell me a word that starts with U so they could have a turn. http://www.toontube.com/video/309/The-Umbrella-Bird-Song We are noticing the letter U in the middle of lots of words. This word- building song was lots of fun! Can your child do it with the volume off? Pause it to give them time to blend the letter sounds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8xKixF1_-c And the popular Storybots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCwiFQh3BZk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk5M7jITfIU

Our letters of the week were O and C - both of which have more than one sound! Catina Cat is a copycat because she copies Kayo Kangaroo or Sammy Snake. We even heard a different sound when the C was with an H; like at the start of Cherro's name! Ollie Octopus is one of the hard-working vowels that show up in lots of words. The children are hearing letters in more places than just the start of words too. That Ollie Octopus was in the middle of words like Mom and dog. They are starting to blend sounds to make words both orally and by making the sounds of the letters they see. So smart! Try having your child blend sounds at home by saying short words like cat, dog or mug one sound at a time and getting your child to tell you the word it makes. We call it "Turtle Talk" in the classroom because that is how our puppet, Tommy Turtle, talks all the time. Check out these links to a "reading machine" on You Tube. We have been using the Smartboard for some similar activities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2hazzQ5bSs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2hazzQ5bSs Please note the calendar item - we have a field trip to the hospital on Wednesday. I'll send home a reminder in their folders on Tuesday.

Wow! Another week went fast! The children had a publishing party for Writer's Workshop this week. The Maritime Marionettes were a big hit with their production of Jack in the Beanstalk - and just when we were working with the letter J! We also explored the letter D this week and used dimes to show how we hear the sound at the first, in the middle and at the end of words. We have started our number unit in math and have been using the terms more, fewer and the same amount as we compare sets. Our plastic bears had to be matched with "chairs" just like in the story of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. Setting the table, passing out snacks and sharing at home are great oppotunities for you to reinforce these terms. The kindergarten children will be practicing the Raffi song, "All I Really Need" for the November assembly this week. It will help explain the World Vision Christmas project starting soon. Here is the link if you want to have your child sing the song with you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMeDh0NVenc Dee Dee Deer and Jerry Jellyfish crafts were fun. November is a great month for Nigel Night Owl to come visit! This week we learned about the N n sound, how Nigel is nocturnal, and how to spell the word "no". The StoryBots filled us in on when we need an N: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZG0GQTskhE PBS kids has a great short video about what it means to be nocturnal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7okKyl7C34

Hard-working Innie Inchworm helped us learn about the two sounds for letter I this week. The children are getting good at hearing the i sound in the middle of words too. We had to use our sharp eyes and brains to find the tricky letter I that looks just like a lower case L! Ask your child to tell you the Ice Cream rhyme and to sing "Itsy Bitsy Spider".  Here is the link to the StoryBots Letter I song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phqQO-istAI&feature=fvsr And Sheryl Crow went to Sesame Street to sing with her friend the Letter I: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUcWNz4YXlA

The children loved licking their lollipop when we heard and made words with the letter L. They heard lots of L's in the middle of words too! We also learned about lizards and lions. Ask your child about what a lizard can do with his tail. They may also tell you what a lion family is called. The Story Bots' L song was popular again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_sjAOnowKM&list=ECD9908AF19A9D352A&index... We laughed at Ernie and Bert singing the La La La song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNFiZXByjpA

With all the excitement around Halloween, I have decided to extend the deadline for the book order until Monday, Nov. 5th. Each order helps us earn books for our classroom - so thank you very much in advance!

Some of you parents make recognize this story from when you were in kindergarten with Mrs. Hendry! It is the Halloween version of the traditional Big Turnip (or carrot, or potato...) story. Children continue to love it especailly with the musical background. I bet some of them know it by heart because we enjoyed acting it out so often. Of course, we were gentle with the kick! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHkuZKAW7bs
We love doing this song with our Zoophonics actions! There is just enough time between the letters to make our action and repeat the sound for each letter three times. When it is your child's turn to be leader of the day, they get to lead the class with the actions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1H-LTV4pkU

You guessed it! Letter W wowed us this week. The children wanted to listen to this song over and over! Great for rhyming too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3foTIHscfzs Our old friend Kermit the Frog had some trouble with W: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN_0HDXCyNs

The children are picking up the letter sounds well - thank you for all your support at home! Some children could use extra practice with letter names too. They should soon be able to name each letter and make its sound quickly. Here is a  fun video that will reinforce the letter names for capital, or upper case, letters and lower case letters too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RafnYeg2lIQ

The children have been noticing patterns everywhere! On their clothes, in books, on the road and even when we eat food. Today we made patterns with our fruit cereal. Yum! Your child may want to make food patterns at home as well.  Gummies, since they start with g, would be a perfect choice this week. Keep this idea in mind when all those Halloween treats arrive!

Gordo Gorilla has been helping us with the sound for the letter G. Here is a link to the song that helped us learn more about gorillas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3QkwLkkgUY&feature=related Did you ever see a gorilla play a guitar? Now's your chance! Go Gorilla! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzP9_RSgo-c&feature=related With Hallowe'en so close we heard that /g/ sound at  the start of "ghost" too. Can your child finish this rhyme? Ghost so scary, Ghost so white, Don't scare.....
Boy, oh boy, we keep hearing lots of B words, and reading lots of books with bears in them! The children begged to listen to these over again so I thought you might enjoy them together! Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdHCYgO9zh8 Here is the version with the words so you can read together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmlvbaRe3q0 We're Going On A Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKGCFxJLqbQ&feature=related And here is the author himself doing the actions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytc0U2WAz4s&feature=related Don't watch them to close to bedtime!  Brown Bear

Kayo Kangaroo gives a little kick when he hears the sound for the letter K. Your child may enjoy telling you some words that start with Kayo's sound as they give a kick. They were very attentive when they had a karate demonstration showing them how to kick in style! Rest assured we talked about saving those kicks for karate class! If they need reminders about the K things we kicked for you may want to check out this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyFJHdBDVfk Stand back!
