Grade 1 has been learning how to spell words with the "Magic E". Both grades love watching these videos that help us read and spell lots of "Magic E" words:

Kindergarten is counting larger numbers now! They are also looking at how combinations of smaller numbers make the bigger numbers.

6: Six Little Ducks - Hold up your fingers while you sing - 5 on one hand and 1 other the other.

7: Alligator King: we enjoyed this video the first view and then stopped them to take a look for combinations on the second time through.

Check out these links with your child now that we have covered all the letters! Can they match all the upper and lower case letters? We'll be doing some of this at school tomorrow!

We were all excited to focus on letter Z this week - the last letter! We learned about Zebras and spelled words like zoo and zoom.
We had a discussion about the two ways to pronounce the letter z- "Zed" and "Zee". See if your child can explain it to you! Here are some videos so you can celebrate too!
This video might make you contemplate the question: "Is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51sUETbqo6Q(link is external)

Thanks so much for your generous contributions to World Vision this holiday season! I am truly fortunate to work in a school and community who work together to make the world a better place! I would like to wish you and your children a wonderful holiday and I am looking forward to 2016!

While kindergarten is learning the consonant sound for the letter y,  Grade 1 took a look at when the letter y sounds like i or e. Check out these videos:

We have met almost all of our Zoophonics animals! We talked about Yancy Yak and her sound today. Monday we will practice reading and writing some popular words that start with /y/ too - the words yes and you that are on our word wall. Many children are excited to spell the color words now too - so we noticed how yellow starts with y.  Check out this Yakety Yak Sesame Street video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJfr8jSVnHY(link is external) And why do we love Y? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qGHh0_6Xbc(link is external) The children got to meet Cliff Hanger from the PBS show Between The Lions. They entertained me with some excellent yodelling after the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwbte-tD9cc(link is external) Parents may enjoy Nora Jones singing about the letter y - we didn't get to this slower tempo song in class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEzxchU4RUY(link is external) We noticed that y is not a letter that plays fair - so stay tuned as we look into that later in the kindergarten year.
