How could I resist the classic Cookie Monster song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye8mB6VsUHw and the Story Bots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDnzj88O6aQ We practiced spelling cat, Cale and Caden. We read a book about cars and watched this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frRcDMGdTWM But be careful! We found out that C is a copycat letter! It copies Kayo Kangaroo's /k/ sound but it also copies Sammy Snake's /s/ sound! And it makes a different sound when it is with the letter h, in words like chair, check, cheek, Charlie...can you think of more? Tricky!

Grade 1 is adding! We can make addition stories when we put groups together. Check out this pirate video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT_wvvEvkw4 This next video is a bit slow but it shows how we use a 2 part mat and drawing to help us solve math problems and write an equation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7mi24ClSMw Check out the links section too - it has a link to math games perfect for Grade 1 right now. You'll soon see addition in the Grade 1 homework!

Take a look at the octopus video we watched because Ollie Octopus is our Zoophonics O animal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH0JNSIrBA4 Here is the Story Bots Letter O link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0LOjbDKvq4 And Sesame Street's "Would you like to buy an O?" that reminded us about the two sounds for O: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml6Yqu-spnM The children are hearing letters in more places than just the start of words too. That Ollie Octopus was in the middle of words like Mom and dog. They are starting to blend sounds to make words both orally and by making the sounds of the letters they see. So smart!

We had no problem coming up with words that start with D! Take a look at how many /d/ words there are in this Story Bots video alone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7E-tnTiW_Y The children are excited to learn words now too - so here is a video that went with the book we read about a d-o-g, dog! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBYuSmqG6fw Some children know the word Dad. We didn't listen to this song about My Dad, but you might enjoy it together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9X6S-PPRso We have a lot of dinosaur fans too! They might like to check out this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0FOZ0-VpcU

The Story Bots had lots of words that started with the /j/ sound! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bGQ-XlLk8M In our class, we had 2 students with names starting with J - Jacob and Josephine.  The Sesame Street crew have some names that star with J too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKYMpRSvg2Y We  made Jack-o-lanterns too (paper ones so far!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Mph3hygIFU We practiced making the letter J - both the upper case that stands on the line and the lower case that looks like a fish hook hanging in the water.
Halloween is a great time to learn about the letter V too! There was a cute vampire on our door the children could read his speeech bubble as they walked in...."I am a vampire".  We read about bats and vampire bats. We found out they are not as scary as we thought! Can your child tell you how vampire bats get their food?  We found lots of other words that start with /v/ too. Grover has lots in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQb6gTJD7zA Check out this V Video - a  volcano ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAiLobOIUTw And we can't forget the Story Bots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNnVgNuagWM

Mrs. Hendry's W Wand could not help pointing to things in the classroom that started with the /w/ sound! It went to a whale, Will, water bottles, pictures of a witch and a wizard, my watch and Willie Weasel's picture! Wow! Our Zoophonics animal is Willie Weasel but since it is so close to Halloween we had to talk about Wanda Witch too! Check ou this video; did you notice the weasel? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDJ0a_g-weU The children laughed at the antics of the letter W with Kermit The Frog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN_0HDXCyNs The Letter W was tricky getting away from the Detective. How did he get away? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0iLTufp_bk

We are learning about the hard-working letter I! It makes 2 sounds - /i/ like in "Inny Inchworm" and /i/ like in "ice cream". I is also a word - we have been writing it and have it on our word wall now. You may enjoy watching these Ii clips with your child. How many /i/ sounding words can they remember? They may show you how smart they are by saying words with the /i/ sound in the middle. Grade 1 is spelling words with /i/ in the middle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phqQO-istAI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUcWNz4YXlA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG1nCrnUim4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHr9LqADJ1Q

The kindergarten students have been comparing amounts (dogs/balls; jack-o-lanterns/candles...) and using the terms more, fewer and the same amount. Check out this link with your child to have some fun with the terms at home: http://www.ixl.com/math/kindergarten/fewer-and-more-comparing-groups
