We have started our geometry and measurement unit. First up? 3D objects! We are talking about and looking at the sides, edges, corners, etc. of 3D shapes and finding lots of classroom objects that are similar. We have been using words like straight, curved, point, top, corners, edges, hollow, solid, roll and flat in order to play I spy and to explain sorting rules. We have noticed that some 3D shapes have triangles, rectangles, circles and squares on their sides! Can your child point out the cylinders, cones, cubes and rectangular prisms? Wow! Here are some videos that help reinforce shape concepts and vocabulary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYaQoBilyls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIBwyohrLmA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiMwcxaFsIY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIPJrZNAYb4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PqZbOYakJk

In math class we have been talking about the numbers that come before and after a number. We spent some time making sure that we really understand the concept of before and after by talking about our classroom routines, getting ready for events like school or hockey and our position in line. Good old Sesame Street had some humorous clips to help solidify the concepts too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLI00pgykjg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGAalNtkGFE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86CpFj9SaVk
Did your child share the events of literacy day? Here are some links that might get the conversation going. The song we sang with everyone in the gym - "Read A  Book Today" :  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYU_3Pb-tXE We were very engrossed while Mrs. Esty read this book while Mr. Henderson and some "wild things" acted it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cOEFnppm_A Mrs. MacDonald and the drama group from NSER entertained us with their play based on ALice in Wonderland. You can see the play at NSER Monday-Wednesday at 7pm. Don't forget to check out the fun activities and suggestions on the official Family Literacy Day site. We watched the chairperson - Robert Munsch himself sing Read with me! Write with me! Surf with me! Sing with me! http://abclifeliteracy.ca/fld/family-literacy-day

We are learning trickier sight words! Come, comes, and said don't "play fair" - we just need to "get our mouth ready" and remember them! In kindergarten, students are exposed to the French language to pique their interest and motivate them to learn the language as they get older. Our class has been very keen! Here are some of our fun songs that expose us to French vocabulary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atNkI6QFZ50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bChrAwLzoSo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaaSprb0IXk

We have been noticing how some of the little words we know are hiding in bigger words! If we can see the little word then reading the big word is easier. This week we practiced reading and writing words with "at" in them. These videos have the words we practiced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UAajWf0TLo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W0xeWNNZE8 There are a few bigger words in this one it has a catchy tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm0QHt9VrBU Watch out for that crazy a!

We are getting really good at counting and writing our numerals to 5! Today we used "Five Frames" to help us count carefully and visualize numbers to 5. This link will show parents what 5 frames are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw8hgAPrACM Pause this one after each new dot picture and have your child tell you how many before you check the answer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRgcWtvTHJE Can you do it this fast? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piFCzBz4Jz8 5 frame

We are back at it in kindergarten! The children have been eager to read, write, count and play this week! We have finished with our "letter of the day" focus so we spent some time reviewing the letters and the sounds. Here are a few links if your child still needs some reinforcement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WRATosTseM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0vTrfbK3FM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyKdUpJQBTY Our sight word this week was go. We learned that really quickly so we added endings to read going and goes too. The children were proud to read sentences like: Dad goes in a boat (with a boat picture) and I am going on the bus. You could add these words (go, going, goes) to your Blast bag and memory game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbNfqunIcJc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZsORjBDGzc

The children spent some time with the Grade 6 students in the computer lab today. They went to a special site where they could play Christmas games and do Christmas activities. Here is the link: http://www.northpole.com/ The elves will take time from their work to talk with you! http://www.northpole.com/Clubhouse/ElfChat/ The clubhouse section is where we spent the most time: http://www.northpole.com/Clubhouse/ When they clicked on the game chest the children liked the concentration game and building a snowman.
