We were all excited to focus on letter Z this week - the last letter! We learned about Zebras and spelled words like zoo and zoom. Liam's mom sent in delicious zucchini muffins - yum! We had a discussion about the two ways to pronounce the letter z- "Zed" and "Zee". See if your child can explain it to you! Here are some videos so you can celebrate too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXVEwkS8SyQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQZl9fRCQbo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jexwRQUSNrQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZBWuLs-GXc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERZnOCiD8A8 This video might make you contemplate the question: "Is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51sUETbqo6Q

We have been counting and acting out counting songs with our classmates and our fingers. Here are a few you may want to check out at home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUPxmO9Eyug http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L6e0mwbGXw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG6GXdUOR_Y See if your child can count how many are gone; how many are left; and how many there are altogether.

Check out this Story Bot video - every question has an answer that starts with Q! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC93kxBMcvE This Sesame Street character tried to make an upper case Q but he has a few problems: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSzB1kDWpto Lower case q is tricky - sometimes it has a curl on the tail, but sometimes it doesn't! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGAE81hD3lg Our zoophinics animal for the letter q is Queeny Quail. Here is video of a real quail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEKIAteCDYU We also learned that q is very shy - it always needs it friend u right beside it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yqcZRjSGKI

We have met almost all of our Zoophonics animals! We talked about Yancy Yak and her sound this week. Of course we practiced reading and writing some popular words that start with /y/ too. The children tried out the words yes and you and we added them to our word wall. Many children are excited to spell the color words now too - yellow was a focus this week.  Check out this Yakety Yak Sesame Street video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJfr8jSVnHY And why do we love Y? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qGHh0_6Xbc The children got to meet Cliff Hanger from the PBS show Between The Lions. They entertained me with some excellent yodelling after the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwbte-tD9cc Parents may enjoy Nora Jones singing about the letter y - we didn't get to this slower tempo song in class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEzxchU4RUY We noticed that y is not a letter that plays fair - so stay tuned as we look into that later in the kindergarten year.

We have been singing this Christmas version of the BINGO song - of course it has the name of our favorite man in the red suit - Santa! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGAYzlqj-aE We also like Santa's counting song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9KkVoxoMLM

Xavier Fox is our Zoophonics animal for the letter X. We could not find many words that start with X, but we could write some with X at the end! Ask your child to spell fox, box, fix, six, ax, and ox - I bet they can do it! Challenge them with the word EXIT. We did watch a cool video of a fox pouncing on its prey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP15zlyra3c And some silly foxes jumping on a trampoline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8xJtH6UcQY This man on  Sesame Street had the same problem we did -finding words that start with x: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rOUYaQ6a0g We read stories with a fox in them: Chicken Little, The Gingerbread Man, and Rosie's Walk. We noticed that the fox is very sly because he wants to eat things like chickens and gingerbread!

We have seen the letter e everywhere this week! Our Zoophonics animal is Ellie Elephant so we read elephant information books and watched a few video clips to learn about these enormous animals. We wished we lived close to the zoo so we could ride on an elephant (like Mrs. Hendry and her granddaughter Annabelle did!).   Here is the link for the E Story Bot song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2q2mq5KOmo And Ellie friend Eddie's egg song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXcpYuhtPz8 We didn't get a chance to watch this Hap Palmer Elephant song video yet, but you may want to check it out with your child: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSsDbneWFJ8 Have an Excellent weekend!
Wow! We heard and found the letter r all over the place today! We read about rabbits and hares and watched rabbit videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR0wgAMSJ4A We read a story about Rudolph and sang the song too:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe77LIYo6zY Tomorrow we will read Little Rabbit Foo Foo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cOT4T2jDho Look at the rabbit Addysen made after we read the book Making A Rabbit!

We have been practicing making our numerals to 3. We are really good at counting that high but we like to take a break and watch these counting videos. The "Counting Crows": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llezjMibxp4 The Clumsy Baker videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXnxTbCECjw&list=PL6DB1240B37018C21 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmfSEuq1F3w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUqwzttQ3wQ

Did you know there really are Umbrella Birds?! Check out these videos: An actual Umbrella Bird: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZVocLe8kBs The Umbrella Bird song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkz-nlN5kM8         We learned that the Letter U is a "Hard Worker" - it makes 2 sounds - the sound at the start of umbrella and its letter name. Hear them both when the Story Bots sing "Unstoppable U": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCwiFQh3BZk We used the letter U in our "magic word maker" and we made and read some of these words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17lyXMgkk9E&list=PLe5MVpQEpecY5uygy1tYsDM...

We had a great time with the letter H! Thanks for sending them with hearts, horses and letter h's on their clothing! Here are the links the children wanted you to know about: Story Bots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk5M7jITfIU I am h-a-p-p-y song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV0CblTeRzs How to make a paper hat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0oGg7It0BM Sesame Street H videos (vintage but hilarious!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97Pwt-OqNwE&list=PLA260546E06C85159 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alEz1TWLJXU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiawwoDk64c

We have been doing lots of counting in math class lately. The children love this song - Chicken counting! Can you guess that we also noticed that chicken starts with that /ch/ sound? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REAXGhFJcXQ
How could I resist the classic Cookie Monster song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye8mB6VsUHw and the Story Bots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDnzj88O6aQ We practiced spelling cat and we tried car too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frRcDMGdTWM But be careful! we found out that C is a copycat letter! It copies Kayo Kangaroo's /k/ sound but it also copies Sammy Snake's /s/ sound! And it makes a different sound when it is with the letter h, in words like chair, check, cheek...can you think of more? Tricky!

Take a look at the octopus video we watched because Ollie Octopus is our Zoophonics O animal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH0JNSIrBA4 Here is the Story Bots Letter O link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0LOjbDKvq4 And Sesame Street's "Would you like to buy an O?" that reminded us about the two sounds for O: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml6Yqu-spnM Did your child tell you about the delicious oatmeal muffins Liam's mom made us? Yum! The children are hearing letters in more places than just the start of words too. That Ollie Octopus was in the middle of words like Mom and dog. They are starting to blend sounds to make words both orally and by making the sounds of the letters they see. So smart!

We had no problem coming up with words that start with D! Take a look at how many /d/ words there are in this story Bots video alone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7E-tnTiW_Y Did your child tell you that we saw deer behind the school when we returned from the hospital this week? The children are excited to learn words now too - so here is a video that went with the book we read about a d-o-g, dog! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBYuSmqG6fw We also practiced writing the word Dad. We didn't listen to this song about My Dad, but you might enjoy it together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9X6S-PPRso
