We had a great sports day at NSEE but we also took some time to acknowledge National Aboriginal Day. The children wanted the link to the Honour Song posted so here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNf1FLW7D0U

We also checked out the Metepenagiag Heritage Park site: http://www.metpark.ca/

The children really enjoyed this reading of the book "no Dragons For Tea". We watched it on You tube since Mrs. Hendry's voice is not good.

Check out Sparky the Fire Dog site with fire safety videos, activities and games that help children learn about fire safety: http://www.sparky.org/ We may need to learn the dance on the video with Steve Songs. We also drew a fire truck while watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg2NlEEYQt0

The children loved listening to read alouds of the Otis the Tractor series that I read while we did farm related language arts activities. Here is the link to the Otis webpage so that you can find out about Otis too. There are games and videos as well as printable pages. http://www.otisthetractor.com/

The children also wanted a link to "How to Draw Otis" - I did not find one but here is a quick "How to draw a Tractor" link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJe6SreFlS4

My eager students are getting excited about the summer coming up but say that they would like some links posted for fun games that also help us learn. Since homework is only reading now (and a bit of math for Grade 1) I thought I would post them now. Have fun!

http://www.abcya.com/ This site has lots of games for reading, spelling and math. You can select the grade level too.

http://sheppardsoftware.com/ Hundreds of educational games, activities, quizzes articles and more.

http://www.fun4thebrain.com/ Lots of fun learning games!

Grade 1 is working on smart strategies, or ways of thinking, to help them learn their math facts.

Here a few links that may help:

Making a 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCHEVkfK6PU

Counting on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyYkNdZsPGs

Subtraction strategies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzgWn5OqOzU&list=PLE3XJf_w_iLcMR6ExE8vEY...

Check out many of the suggested links for more ideas.

Learning to read and write digraphs (when 2 letter combine to make a new, differnt sound) helps us get smarter every day!

The children have enjoyed these videos:

In our measurement unit we checked out how long/ tall and short things are compared to each other.

You may want to have some fun with this at home! Here are some ideas: Line your family up in order of height;  line up shoes in order of length; roll out playdoh (or cookie dough ! ) - who can make the longest :"snake"? ; line up the stuffed animals in order of height...

Sesame Street has fun with this concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVJQcwga0eI (link is external)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USGCnq0SRms (link is external) and  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtDBSvDbzxA (link is external)

Ask your child about "the same starting point" as you watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWHivueHzg (link is external)

Here is a link to some printable worksheets that address this topic too: http://www.mathworksheets4kids.com/tall-short.php

Grade 1 is reviewing their doubles facts in math class. Remember that we have a few tricks to help us - for example 9+9=18 is our 18 wheeler fact and 6+6=12 is our dozen of eggs fact. Can your child tell you the rest? Here are the links again to some games that make practice fun: http://www.ictgames.com/robindoubles.html(link is external)  http://www.maths-games.org/ladybird-doubles.html(link is external)  http://www.ictgames.com/bridgedoubles.html(link is external)

We have met almost all of our Zoophonics animals! We talked about Yancy Yak and her sound today. We practiced reading and writing some popular words that start with /y/ too - the words yes and you that are on our word wall. Many children are excited to spell the color words now too - yellow starts with y.  Check out this Yakety Yak Sesame Street video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJfr8jSVnHY(link is external) And why do we love Y? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qGHh0_6Xbc(link is external) The children will meet Cliff Hanger from the PBS show Between The Lions. Can your child yodel? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwbte-tD9cc(link is external) Parents may enjoy Nora Jones singing about the letter y -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEzxchU4RUY(link is external) We noticed that y is not a letter that plays fair - you may want to look at the post about Grade 1 learning that y is sometimes a vowel.
