We have been talking about Earth Day and ways that we can protect the earth. We have listened to stories, wrote ways we can help and did some crafts. Please remember to look at the list that was sent home for you to do as a family. We will discuss these on Monday. I have attached some websites that you can watch at home.

We had lots of fun in math class lately. In our measurement unit we have been checking out how long/ tall and short things are compared to each other.

You may want to have some fun with this at home! Here are some ideas: Line your family up in order of height;  line up shoes in order of length; roll out playdoh (or cookie dough ! ) - who can make the longest :"snake"? ; line up the stuffed animals in order of height...

Sesame Street has fun with this concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVJQcwga0eI (link is external)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USGCnq0SRms (link is external) and  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtDBSvDbzxA (link is external)

Ask your child about "the same starting point" as you watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWHivueHzg (link is external)

Here is a link to some printable worksheets that address this topic too: http://www.mathworksheets4kids.com/tall-short.php

Wow - we are moving right along and the children are beginning to learn sight words and read leveled books!  They are doing a great job. Our sight word of the week last week was "am". There are lots of ways to keep reinforcing this at home. Some examples are writing it on paper, on the computer, in flour, etc. You can also spell it while clapping, stomping, jumping and so on.   This weeks sight word: "is".

Our Zoophonics animal is Ellie Elephant so we read elephant information books and watched a few video clips to learn about these enormous animals. We wished we lived close to the zoo so we could ride on an elephant (like Mrs. Hendry and her granddaughter Annabelle did!). Here is the link for the E Story Bot song:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2q2mq5KOmo(link is external) And Ellie's friend Eddie's egg song:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXcpYuhtPz8(link is external) Check out this Hap Palmer Elephant song video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSsDbneWFJ8(link is external)

The Story Bots got us ready for the letter R r today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJe70FE85is(link is external) Here is an old Sesame Street R video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXTvwdWQ17M(link is external) We watched this one since it has the words too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0glomgHzv4(link is external)  Try to draw a rabbit! -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM1tYHJTz7E

Did you know there really are Umbrella Birds?! Check out these videos: An actual Umbrella Bird: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZVocLe8kBs(link is external)  The Umbrella Bird song:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkz-nlN5kM8(link is external)          We learned that the Letter U is a "Hard Worker" - it makes 2 sounds - the sound at the start of umbrella and its letter name. Hear them both when the Story Bots sing "Unstoppable U": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCwiFQh3BZk(link is external)  Can you read some of these words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17lyXMgkk9E&list=PLe5MVpQEpecY5uygy1tYsDM...(link is external)

How could I resist the classic Cookie Monster song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye8mB6VsUHw(link is external) and the Story Bots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDnzj88O6aQ(link is external) Watch this car video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frRcDMGdTWM(link is external) But be careful! we found out that C is a copycat letter! It copies Kayo Kangaroo's /k/ sound but it also copies Sammy Snake's /s/ sound! And it makes a different sound when it is with the letter h, in words like chair, check, cheek...can you think of more? Tricky!

Take a look at the octopus video we watched because Olive Octopus is our Zoophonics O animal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH0JNSIrBA4(link is external) Here is the Story Bots Letter O link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0LOjbDKvq4(link is external) And Sesame Street's "Would you like to buy an O?" that reminded us about the two sounds for O: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml6Yqu-spnM(link is external) The children are hearing letters in more places than just the start of words too. That Olive Octopus was in the middle of words like Mom and dog. They are starting to blend sounds to make words both orally and by making the sounds of the letters they see. So smart!

We are getting really good at counting and writing our numerals to 5! We can now use "Five Frames" to help us count carefully and visualize numbers to 5. This link will show parents what 5 frames are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw8hgAPrACM(link is external) Pause this one after each new dot picture and have your child tell you how many before you check the answer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRgcWtvTHJE(link is external) Can you do it this fast? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piFCzBz4Jz8(link is external) 5 frame

We had no problem coming up with words that start with D! Take a look at how many /d/ words there are in this Story Bots video alone!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7E-tnTiW_Y(link is external) The children are excited to learn words now too - so here is a video that went with the book we read about a d-o-g, dog! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBYuSmqG6fw(link is external) Some children know the word Dad. We didn't listen to this song about My Dad, but you might enjoy it together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9X6S-PPRso(link is external) We have a lot of dinosaur fans too! They might like to check out this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0FOZ0-VpcU

The Story Bots had lots of words that started with the /j/ sound! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bGQ-XlLk8M(link is external) We had 2 students with names starting with J, and we could think of lots more (especially some moms)!  The Sesame Street crew have some names that star with J too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKYMpRSvg2Y(link is external) We practiced making the letter J - both the upper case that stands on the line and the lower case that looks like a fish hook hanging in the water.  You will be able to see our paper Jack-O-lanterns when you come on Halloween, and we took some paper bag ones home today. We even carved a real one!! Check out the pictures!
