We have been working on our measurement unit. Remember to keep using the language at home and compare the length (long, short), height (tall, short) and capacity of things around home! The kids especially liked comparing capacity by guessing which container could hold more water (we used water with food coloring). To check fill one container to the top and then pour it into the other - does it all fit in or is there more room left? What does that show you?

Report cards will be sent home Monday.  The children have all done very well!  I am so proud of their accomplishments.  They have settled into our school very nicely.  Way to go KH!  Parents are asked to return their Parent Teacher Interview slips and the brown report card envelope (signed and dated) to the school on Tuesday.

We have been working on putting words together and taking them apart. These skills are very helpful to the children when they are reading and writing.  It can be something that you practice at home and have fun with.  For instance to practice blending words you may play object hunt.  You can tell them to go get the c-a-t (saying the sounds seperately).  They need to blend the word together and realize it is the cat that you want.  Now it is their turn - so they have to segment a word or take it apart in order to give you an instruction.  They may say "Bring me a d-i-sh."  **It is important to begin these activities with words that only have 2-3 sounds in them and as they get stronger at them then try 4 sounds.  Have fun!

The sight words that we have learned so far are: am, a, and, big, be, Dad, go, here, he, I, is, in, little, Mom, my, me, on, see, she, the, we, look, at   Please continue to review these with your child each night. They should practice both reading and spelling these words.  I will be sending home activities each week that include sheets and games.  In addition to these you can have them write them in sand, flour, shaving creme, pudding etc. They could make words with play doh or wikki sticks.  You can also make up some fun games like "I Spy" where you print the words on a page and take turns "spying" a word. For instance you say "I spy the word am." Then your child points to it and spells it. Then it is their turn to spy a word.

We have learned the letters Aa and Bb so far at school. Keep reviewing these at home by pointing out words that begin with those sounds and finding the letters in magazines, books and signs.  You can also help them practice making the letters. It would be fun to make the letters in sand, flour, shaving cream or cornmeal (practice names this way too)!
