We have been learning about all the parts of the orchestra by helping Violet and Uncle Ollie collect the missing instruments on this great site: http://listeningadventures.carnegiehall.org/ypgto/index.aspx In class the children took turns helping Violet, but at home they may be able to do the whole adventure! If you register, the game will save where you leave off each time.

Because 7, 8 (ate), 9! You guessed it! We are counting up a storm in kindergarten again. We are being more careful counters now because the numbers are getting bigger. We notice that we need to keep track of what we counted and/or arrange what we are counting.Of course we are watching fun videos that make counting fun and help us visualize common arrangements for the numbers to 10. Here are some we watched recently:A Number 9 Martian Beauty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ5Y3TizswY The Classic Clumsy Baker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZjObQW247QThe Alligator King: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVDUYJo3CjU9 Pigeons on a Wire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AXaWdM-h5sAnd did you know how many children the Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe had?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARw69UtyuvM
We have been exploring our sense of sight during our "You and Your World" time. Children have noticed that some things are harder to do when you can't see! They found they couldn't catch very well or draw a picture of themselves when they were wearing a blindfold! We also discussed how, if you couldn't see, you would not be able to know the colour of things. We had fun predicting and then watching what happened when we combined the 3 primary colours (food colouring and water)  to make new colours. Here is a fun video that shows the colours we made. Do try this at home!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu44JRTIxSQWatch Maria Menounos and Oscar discuss how they use their 5 senses:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2iqLRyL5kg

The last few weeks we have been learning all about silent E.  He has so many names (Silent E, Bossy E, Magic E) but they all mean the same thing! When we see this Ee at the end of a word he makes the other vowel say it's own letter name.  There are some really cute videos that we have watched. I have put some links below for you to watch and enjoy! Try muting the sound and reading the words yourself for some extra practice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZhl6YcrxZQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx6-xxkodS8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsWtEYF3HCY

Congratulations to all of the students for the great spelling they did last week! I have so many super spellers that it took us a long time to narrow it down to 3 children to represent the class in the gym. I was so proud of all of you.  The finalists from our class were: Carter, Brianne and Noah. They represented us very well! Way to go!

We had a wonderful day learning and singing about helping our planet, Earth! Raffi has some great songs for this theme. Big Beautiful Planet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z23KEHEt0dE Evergreen Everblue: http://www.artistdirect.com/video/raffi-evergreen-everblue/50879 The children were excited to bring home their checklist to record the ways that they will help the earth all year. We will share the list with the class next Monday, April 29th.

We are starting to get ready for Valentine's Day! Thank you to parents for the Kleenex boxes - we have enough and will be decorating them this week to turn them into our Valentine boxes. We have been reading some great poems and stories about being good friends, liking and loving. Our sight words have gone along well with this concept - we learned "for, you, like" last week.  Check out the links below to find some of our songs/poems. "Snuggle Puppy" is a book written by Sandra Boynton that we have read and sung. This link will take you to various songs, scroll down to the Philadelphia Chickens book cover and beneath it click on the "Snuggle Puppy" link. http://www.sandraboynton.com/sboynton/boyntonmusic.html   We have also read a rebus poem called "I Love You". This can be found with the following link: http://www.jeanmarzollo.com/books/iloveyourebus.html   A cute song to help reinforce some of our sight words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo5PF0bDjq4

We are still working on numbers to 5. We are now working on counting forward and backwards as well as starting at different numbers. For instance start counting at 3 and count to 5 or start at 4 and count backwards to 0.  Another skill that we have been working hard at is telling the number that comes "before" or "after" a given number.  To make practice fun you can use a die and roll a number then tell the number that comes before or after.  It is also great number practice to each roll a die and decide who have the larger number.  Here is a website to practice numbers to 5.   http://www.wmnet.org.uk/resources/gordon/Count%20&%20Order.swf

We have been working hard on learning lots of new words. This will help us read lots and lots of great books.  Keep practicing these words at home so you can read and spell them in a "snap"!!  Make learning fun by playing concentration, BLAST, bingo and any other games you can adapt to work with our sight words.  Here is an updated list of the words we have learned:   am, a, at, and, are, an, big, be, come, Dad, go, here, he, is, I, in, little, look, Mom, my, me, on, she, see, said, the, to, up, we   This week we will be working on the words: like, for, you

Last week we learned lots of sight words! We worked with he, me, we, be, she, look, at. The kids enjoyed some videos for the words look and at. Follow the links below:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MG5pZ0F3Jshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v... you can spell "at" what other words can you spell? Now if you can spell "look" what other words? Try changing the first letter in look and see what you can spell.

It was great to get back last week and see each other again! The children settled right back into our routines. I was so impressed that they picked right up where we left off!  We finished up with our alphabet by focusing on the letter Qq and Zz. This week we will be doing some letter activities to finish up and work on alphabetical order as well as upper and lowercase. We learned a new sight word "go" and also looked at it with some endings "goes" and "going". In math we continued on with our numbers to 5 unit. We practiced forming the number five and did a few activities with 5 kittens (working on different combinations of 5, such as 2 in the box and 3 out of the box makes 5).  Keep practicing your numbers, letters and sight words at home!
