We did manage to get a few things covered between snow storms this week. We discovered how knowing the word "it" can help us read and spell lots of other words - like bit, kit, sit, hit, fit, lit, nit, pit, quit. We also looked at how two letters "blend" together at the start of words with the little word "it" hiding inside - spit, skit. Here is the link to the "it" video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dmr8WrYbUNI&playnext=1&list=PLCBFFAAA3E68... and to an "it" word family "book": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lJnm1wiepc&playnext=1&list=PLC6F6137994A... Your child may want to write "it" words on an magna doodle or a wipe-off board. The children think it is cool that you can change one letter and have a whole new word! We continued counting to 100 with these videos, some have an exercise twist to them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9-pEVaO4pM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4rhzjD5ohw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGKXZVxAffM

There has been lots of nice talk in kindergarten this week - we have been talking about friendship as we get ready for Valentine's Day. Isn't it interesting that our sight words this week are "like", "you" and "for"? :) Check out Sandra Boynton's site. She has a great song called "Snuggle Puppy" that we have been reading and singing in class. Follow this link and scroll down to the Philadelphia Chickens book. Snuggle Puppy is the sixth song. http://www.sandraboynton.com/sboynton/boyntonmusic.html The children also enjoyed the rebus book I Love You by Jean Marzollo. The pictures helped us read the whole book! Here is the link to the whole book online! http://www.jeanmarzollo.com/books/iloveyourebus.html This link shows a cute way to "sing" out some of the sight words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo5PF0bDjq4

As part of our "You and Your World" curriculum, we have been discussing how we've changed as we have grown up. The children brought in baby pictures and we had a great time figuring out who was who. See if you recognize anyone!

We had a great time skating on Friday, February 1st – as you can see from the pictures. The children were very excited and proud of their progress. Thanks to the many parents and grandparents who came to help! Apologies if there is not a picture of everyone – those skaters move fast!

We are learning even more sight words! This week we read the words "come", "to" and "said" in poems and books. Here are the links to some videos that can help reinforce the words. Remember, sight words are just that - words to be known instantly, not decoded. More exposure helps! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orrO3YsL8hA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhezumTwtko We also had fun "Making Words" with the "an" base since "can" is a new sight word too. If we knew "an" we could just add a letter at the front to make a new word! We made words like "fan"and  "tan", and then added a "d" on the end and made even more words - "sand", "band", "hand"...exciting times in kindergarten! Have a look at this link and see if your child can read the words with the computer muted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssOwaEHnMM8 Here is the fun Chicken Jane song that helped us with the "am" word base: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP7MnYK-rYQ
