North and South Esk Elementary School is seeking community volunteers to assist with literacy for Grade 2 students. We are preparing to implement a program called “ELF”. To quote from the organization's brochure:
“Elementary Literacy Friends (ELF) is a volunteer-based tutoring program that helps Grade 2 students who are struggling with literacy. ELF provides training, materials, feedback and all of the support necessary for the tutor to make a positive, lifelong impact not just on an individual child, but on how that child will contribute to society throughout his or her life.”
Welcome back everyone to another great year at North and South Esk Elementary School!
A reminder that the first day of school is Tuesday September 3rd 2013. A special note to Kindergarten parents that there will be a staggered entry for your child/ren on Tuesday and Wednesday of the first week. Please refer to the letter you received earlier in the summer regarding the day your child arrives for their first day.
We would like to take this time to thank our entire learning community of North and South Esk Elementary School for making this year a great one!

Our Grade One classes went to Beaubear's Island on Thursday, June 13th. We visited the Interpretive Centre, where our tour guide, Cletus, shared a wealth of information with us. We were able to use audio-video displays, look at scale models, and examine artifacts. We went over to Beaubear's Island by boat, where we were treated to a guided, historic tour, filled with many surprises. We learned about the history of the shipbuilding era and the importance it had on this area at that time. After a picnic lunch, we walked to the Post Office in Nelson, where each student was given a postcard

Small Ball wrapped up last weekend. We had great numbers all year with about 40 students from K-3 registered. The players really got a taste of a great sport and had a lot of fun in the process. Next year we are looking at adding to the program by having 3 sessions which will include K-1, 2-3 and 4-5. It should be great! A special thanks to all of the players who gave up their Saturday mornings to help the little ones out. We couldn't have done it without you. Great to see our older students helping out!
