Mental Math

The students will be working with Mental Math strategies this year. Here are a few examples of what they are about. The students have all brought home a handout on the strategies covered for the year. Adding   Left to right To determine a sum of 23 + 46, think 20 + 40 and 3 + 6   Compensation Taking one number to the nearest multiple of 10 and then conpensate To determine a sum 28 + 47, add 2 to 28 and subtract 2 from 47  to compensate, think 30 + 45 = 75   Using Doubles 24 + 26 is the same as 25 + 25   Subtraction Strategies   Taking the subtrahend to the nearest multiple of 10 and balance. To determine the difference between 48 - 19 think 49 - 20   add 1 to 19 to make 20 and balane it out by adding 1 to 48 to make 49 Count up 62 - 45 A student may think 45 + 5, then 50 + 12 and 5 + 12 gives the  difference of 17. A open number line is helpful with this strategy.
