All I Really Need by Raffi

The two kindergarten classes will be leading the school in singing Raffi's "All I Really Need" song at the assembly on Thursday. Ask your child about the song and practice it with them!

Wow - we are moving right along and the children are beginning to learn sight words and read leveled books!  They are doing a great job. Our sight word of the week last week was "am". There are lots of ways to keep reinforcing this at home. Some examples are writing it on paper, on the computer, in flour, etc. You can also spell it while clapping, stomping, jumping and so on.   This weeks sight word: "is".

The weeks are just flying by in kindergarten! We are half way to our 100th day party which we are really looking forward to! Last week we worked on the letters Jj and Dd. Check these at home and if your child isn't sure of the name, sound or formation practice them a bit more. The Maritime Marionettes visited our school on Thursday with a great performance of Jack and the Beanstalk. It was a slightly different version of the classic tale. We discussed the many ways it was the same as other versions as well as ways it was different from other versions. Ask your child to tell you all about these differences. It is a great authentic chance for them to retell a story.

Blending Words

We have been working on blending words together. So if I say c-a-t, the children say "cat". This is a skill that you can practice at home. There are lots of fun ways to do it - to give you the idea check out the website attached. Some other ideas are:  Shopping List Create a grocery shopping list, telling the children each item in sounds (e.g., p-o-p  or  g-u-m). Have the children identify the word. Start with words that only have 1 or 2 sounds.Bumper Blocks Provide each child with three buttons/pennies. Explain to the children that they’ will be building words with them. Say a three-sound word (e.g., f-u-n) with a definite break between the sounds and point to each button as you say the sound. Repeat the sounds, moving the blocks closer to each other. Repeat the sounds one last time while pushing the blocks together completely. Have the children practice with their own blocks as you provide them with more words that contain three sounds.

Fill Your Bucket

Mrs. Estey has been visiting our classroom once a week to work on some great social skills such as greeting people, raising our hands, asking for help, sharing our work and cleaning up.  All of these kind and thoughtful actions help to fill other people's imaginary buckets.  This song is one that reminds us of the wonderful things we can do for one another.  The children seem to really love it! Enjoy!

Who Let the Letters Out?

The children are making amazing progress learning their letter sounds! Thanks for all your help practicing these at home - keep up the great work. Some children still need some practice saying the letter names as well as the sound that it makes. When you are going over the letters ask your child to tell you both the name of the letter and the sound it makes. This song is a fun way that we practice at school. Sing along with it (saying the letter name) and then when it pauses, have your child say the sound.

Ask your child to sing you the song "I'm a Pumpkin" - they are awesome at it! Open the word document below to see the words (although I doubt your child needs them).
