We were all excited to focus on letter Z this week - the last letter! We learned about Zebras and spelled words like zoo and zoom. We had a discussion about the two ways to pronounce the letter z- "Zed" and "Zee". See if your child can explain it to you! Xavier Fox is our Zoophonics animal for the letter X. We could not find many words that start with X, but we could write some with X at the end! Ask your child to spell fox, box, fix, six, ax, and ox - I bet they can do it! Challenge them with the word EXIT. We have met almost all of our Zoophonics animals! We talked about Yancy Yak and her sound today. We practiced reading and writing some popular words that start with /y/ too - the words yes and you that are on our word wall. Many children are excited to spell the color words now too - yellow starts with y.  Check out this Yakety Yak Sesame Street video: is external) And why do we love Y? is external) The children met Cliff Hanger from the PBS show Between The Lions. Did you know there really are Umbrella Birds?! We were finding some shape names tricky but are getting much better with practice. We can also find shapes when we have clues that describe them. We use words like straight, curved, and points when we talk about the sides and corners.

The kindergarten kids are learning about 3D shapes so they can pretend to be elves in Santa's Workshop!We are talking about and looking at the sides, edges, corners, etc. of 3D shapes and finding lots of classroom objects that are similar. We are learning to use words like straight, curved, point, top, corners, edges, hollow, solid, roll and flat in order to play I spy and to explain sorting rules. We have noticed that some 3D shapes have triangles, rectangles, circles and squares on their sides! Can your child point out the cylinders, cones, cubes and rectangular prisms? Check out this Story Bot video - every question has an answer that starts with Q! is external) This Sesame Street character tried to make an upper case Q but he has a few problems: is external) Lower case q is tricky - sometimes it has a curl on the tail, but sometimes it doesn't! is external) Our zoophinics animal for the letter q is Queeny Quail. We had fun talking about the terms before and after today. The children could answer questions like what do you do before you get out of bed? (Wake Up) and What do you do after you go to bed? (Go to sleep) Have fun with this at home - before/after supper? before/after playing?

The children thought these videos were hilarious!   

Wow! We heard and found the letter r all over the place! We watched rabbit videos: is external) We read a story about Rudolph and sang the song too: We have lots of students that start with R: Rylan, Rylie and Ryker. Other students found the letter r at different places in their names and on their clothing. Can they spell the Christmas color that starts with r?
